This one’s from the Macquarie Dispatch, Issue 13

July 31, 2013

There’s an eradication of rats and rabbits being undertaken on Macquarie Island. A short note on rat behaviour from the field teams:

“We found several nests where there had been a dead rabbit in a hole with old rat scat near it and a rat nest located above it in smaller holes. it looked like the rats had been ‘caching’ the rabbit as food. We also found several nests with piles of Brodifacoum bait stored in good condition underneath the dead rat – this was ‘cached’ bait.”
